Nancy K Schofield

Biography

Nancy King Schofield was born in Saint John, N.B. and grew up in a thriving Irish community. She began to sing publicly at six years and received classical training in vocal and piano for nine years.  Participation in the New Brunswick Music Festival brought her many awards but at the same time her ability for drawing and painting became evident. However, both her family and the community encouraged the pursuit of music.

After high school she entered St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1961. She was married in London, Ontario two years later and eventually had three children. For the next seventeen years her time was filled with family and many moves in and out of Ontario, Quebec and British Colunbia. Finally she returned to New Brunswick in 1980 where a course in oil painting rekindled her interest in visual art. Her portfolio submitted to Mount Allison University was accepted and Schofield entered the BFA program in 1986. She was on the Dean’s list for five consecutive years and graduated with a double major in painting and printmaking taking the Loomis and Toles award for painting.

By 1991 she was active at the Aberdeen Cultural Center and soon after began to share a studio space. Along with twelve other artists she helped found Gallery 12 and served on the board as secretary-treasurer for ten years. Her has been active in the artistic community both locally and provincially for the past twenty years and has donated her work annually for various fund raising events.

King Schofield organized a writer’s group in 1997 called the “Breach House Gang”
that continues to work together to provide necessary support and encouragement for what is often a solitary process. In 1999 she planned the construction of a studio where she could seriously pursue her art process. Constructed in Grand Barachois, N.B. and surrounded by nature, this location with its quiet beauty affords a setting that nurtures both writing and visual art that she continues to explore and develop.

I constantly seek answers to the many questions that confront us in life by observing nature and by positioning myself in a continuing search through the process of art in all of its forms. My objective is to work consistently and seriously in order for my process of art to evolve…to secure my evolution.
